Social Security's Old-Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance (OASDI) Wage Limit

Action Required by Department: Share the following information with all departmental human resources (HR) office employees.
 
Description: The Social Security Administration published the new 2022 Social Security's Old-Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance (OASDI) Wage Limit. The withholding rate remains at 6.2% of eligible earnings. The annual taxable wage limit increased to $147,000.00 per employee with a maximum contribution of $9,114.00. These changes are effective January 1, 2022. 
 
The Medicare withholding rate remains at 1.45% of eligible earnings up to $200,000.00.  Amounts is excess of $200,000.00 will be subject to an additional 0.9% for the employee share for a total of 2.35%.
 
For the portion of an employee’s income that exceeds the wage limit for Social Security, only Medicare will be withheld.  For the portion of an employee’s income that exceeds the $200,000.00 wage limit for Medicare, the percentage for the employee share raises from 1.45% to 2.35%.
