The division serves the public through its free Web site search tools, toll-free telephone service and extensive written notices and correspondence. Controller Chiang has sponsored successful reform legislation removing restrictions that previously prevented the division from notifying persons believed to be the owners of unclaimed property already sent to the State, and the division has responded by mailing out nearly 1.6 million notices. The Controller is currently sponsoring additional reforms. Common types of unclaimed properties include bank accounts, safe deposit box contents, and securities.
