Unclaimed Property for Government Agencies
A new law took effect in 2020 allowing the State Controller’s Office (SCO) to automatically transfer unclaimed property to state and local governments, school districts, and institutions of higher education (i.e., the University of California, California State University, and community college systems) without the entity having to file claims. Since this law took effect, the SCO has returned millions of dollars to hundreds of entities.
