SANTA ANA — Today, State Controller Malia M. Cohen reunited 12 cities in Orange County and the county itself, with a combined $241,983.11 in unclaimed property checks. Controller Cohen made the announcement during a press conference hosted by the Orange County Auditor-Controller Andrew Hamilton.

During today’s press conference, Orange County Auditor-Controller Hamilton unveiled a new website that combines the State Controller’s Office (SCO) unclaimed property database with county mapping data, allowing residents to easily search for unclaimed property linked to any address in Orange County — making it easier than ever for them to claim what’s rightfully theirs.

“Today’s announcement is about partnership and purpose. My office has a responsibility to safeguard unclaimed property until it can be reunited with its rightful owners—and that’s exactly what we’re doing here in Orange County,” stated Controller Cohen. “By returning more than $241,000 to the county and 12 of its cities, we’re putting these resources back to work in the communities they belong to. I want to commend Auditor-Controller Hamilton and his team for their innovative approach in helping residents find and claim what’s theirs. This is government at its best—transparent, collaborative, and focused on delivering results for the people we serve.”

Since 1959, California’s Unclaimed Property Program has protected consumers by ensuring that businesses return lost or forgotten assets to their rightful owners. Common types of unclaimed property include bank accounts, stocks, bonds, uncashed checks, insurance benefits, and safe deposit box contents. Today, the SCO safeguards $15 billion in unclaimed property, holding these funds until they can be returned to the individuals who are entitled to them.

Controller Cohen urges all Californians to visit SCO’s claimit.ca.gov website to learn more about and search for their unclaimed property.
