SACRAMENTO — Today, State Controller Malia M. Cohen, published the financial data for cities, counties, and special districts for Fiscal Year 2022-23 on the State Controller’s Office (SCO) By the Numbers (BTN) website. One city and 60 special districts did not file a report with the SCO. San Francisco is both a city and a county; the website reports San Francisco as a city.
California law requires cities, counties, and special districts to annually report their financial transaction information to the SCO within seven months after the close of the fiscal year. The State Controller also publishes financial data of transportation planning agencies, transit operators, and state and local government pension plans.
“The FY 2022-23 data released today is a compilation of financial transaction information submitted by 481 cities, 57 counties, and 4,887 special districts,” stated Controller Cohen. “By publishing this data every year, we make it easier for taxpayers to track revenues, expenditures, and other financial data for their respective local government agency. The BTN website is one of the SCO’s arrows in its quiver in creating greater transparency on how taxpayer dollars are being collected and spent at both the state and local levels. I encourage California taxpayers to visit our website to learn more about the financial condition in their community.”
The BTN open data website encompasses a 20-year period – from FY 2002-03 through FY 2022-23. The website uses technology to make valuable public information easily accessible, shareable, and usable, allowing users to sort and filter information to identify trends and analyze spending. Visitors can also create custom reports tailored to their interests. The data on BTN provides greater accountability and transparency in local governments.
As the chief fiscal officer of California, Controller Cohen is responsible for accountability and disbursement of the state’s financial resources. The Controller has independent auditing authority over government agencies that spend state funds. She is a member of numerous financing authorities, and fiscal and financial oversight entities including the Franchise Tax Board. She also serves on the boards for the nation’s two largest public pension funds. Follow the Controller on X at @CAController and on Facebook at California State Controller’s Office.
