SACRAMENTO—California State Controller Malia M. Cohen today issued the following statement in response to Governor Gavin Newsom’s May budget revision:

“In these times of historic economic uncertainty caused by the financial impacts of COVID, high inflation, supply chain disruption, and geopolitical tension, I applaud the Governor for crafting in the May Revision a budget that both addresses essential priorities of the state such as public safety, education, health care, while investing in California’s future through investments in housing, infrastructure, and climate change. As the State Controller and chief fiscal officer of the State, I stand ready to engage in the difficult conversations around budget priorities and what I believe to be sound and prudent fiscal decisions that set California on a solid path to sustainable fiscal health and prosperity.”

As the chief fiscal officer of California, Controller Cohen is responsible for accountability and disbursement of the state’s financial resources. The Controller has independent auditing authority over government agencies that spend state funds. She is a member of numerous financing authorities, and fiscal and financial oversight entities including the Franchise Tax Board. She also serves on the boards for the nation’s two largest public pension funds. Follow the Controller on Twitter at @CAController and on Facebook at California State Controller’s Office.
