SACRAMENTO—State Controller Betty T. Yee today issued the following statement in response to Governor Gavin Newsom’s May budget revision:

“My team stands ready to disburse inflation-related assistance as soon as the governor and legislature reach agreement on who will receive this aid and what amount the aid will be. The ongoing challenges in getting COVID-19 rent relief to qualified applicants must inform a more efficient framework this time around.

The growing number of unhoused Californians and the numerous roadblocks preventing development of critical new affordable housing units must remain a priority focus rather than new initiatives that ignore the urgent everyday needs of struggling Californians.

The historic levels of funding available to meet some of California's most critical challenges demand proven strategies with measurable results and the oversight and transparency to ensure those results are attained.”

As the chief fiscal officer of California, Controller Yee is responsible for accountability and disbursement of the state’s financial resources. The Controller has independent auditing authority over government agencies that spend state funds. She is a member of numerous financing authorities, and fiscal and financial oversight entities including the Franchise Tax Board. She also serves on the boards for the nation’s two largest public pension funds. Elected in 2014 and reelected in 2018, Controller Yee is the tenth woman elected to a statewide office in California’s history.
