SACRAMENTO—State Controller Betty T. Yee issued the following statement on a report released Monday by the Little Hoover Commission on the effects of the underground economy:

“The Little Hoover Commission’s thorough investigation and thoughtful recommendations are in line with the concerns I have long expressed about the effects of these off-the-books businesses on California’s economy. The victims often are workers who work in unsafe conditions and get shorted on pay as well as businesses that comply with labor, insurance, and tax laws.  As a member of the State Board of Equalization, I pushed for better coordination among state agencies to ensure our joint enforcement of labor, insurance, and tax laws on unscrupulous businesses has teeth.  I also recognized and proposed establishing a central point of entry for complaints to the State about unlawful businesses, and I commit to working with the Legislature on enacting this recommendation and others put forth by the Little Hoover Commission.”
