The State Controller’s Office (SCO) is a constitutionally established office with the responsibility of fiscal oversight of the expenditure of public dollars.  The person selected for this position will play a leadership role in the Public Affairs division of the SCO to oversee staff and execute communications strategies in a fast-paced, information-centric office.

Scope of Position:
With direction provided by the Deputy Controller for Public Affairs, the Staff Services Manager III (Managerial) will act in a supervisory capacity, helping to oversee the day-to-day operation of the Public Affairs Office, scheduling work assignments and reviewing for consistency and accuracy.  The incumbent will also be responsible for oversight of internal staff communications including written, video, and digital communications, and assisting in clarifying and/or establishing communication policies for the department. Specific duties include, but will not be limited to, the following:

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the communication efforts of the State Controller’s Office, through the direction of the Deputy Controller for Public Affairs; 
  • Develop, integrate, and implement communications activities to enhance awareness and understanding of the State Controller’s duties and services; 
  • Assist in identifying public policies that impact the State Controller’s Office and coordinating responses to policies that encroach on the State Controller’s authority;
  • Collaborate with senior executive staff to develop internal communications and respond to inquiries from internal stakeholders; 
  • Assist in the development and implementation of outreach and education programs and materials;
  • Develop and implement an employee recognition program
  • Coordinate regularly scheduled meetings with the Controller and staff
  • Manage communications calendar
  • With direction, provide supervision to subordinate staff members responsible for researching and writing internal communications to articulate the position of the State Controller; 
  • When assigned, provide support to the Controller at key public events or represent on behalf of the Controller;
  • Travel to various locations when required and in the discharge of assigned functions.
